  • New book: the Story of A Rocha Lebanon in Postcards from the Middle East

Our work

A Rocha Lebanon was founded in 1996 with its initial focus to save the Aammiq marshes from destruction. The Aammiq Wetland is Lebanon’s most significant remaining natural freshwater site, one of all too few in the Middle East. This major stop-over site for migrating birds was under severe threat. Due to the work of A Rocha, the reduction of its habitats has been reversed, and it is now a designated Ramsar site. Beyond Aammiq, A Rocha has gained valuable experience in working throughout the country, on behalf of government departments, nature reserves and international conservation bodies. This included scientific research, practical conservation and environmental education.

A Rocha Lebanon 3-Year Plan and Map

A Rocha Lebanon 3-Year Plan and Map

  • Mekse Nature Park

The three- to five-year project began in August 2017 and aims to provide open spaces for public recreation and environmental education to serve the village of Mekse and its surrounding refugee communities. Native trees and shrubs provide food for wildlife, so that in time, the park will also offer habitat for birds, reptiles and invertebrates.

  • Qab Elias Environmental Project

This project has been designed with the local residents to help counter the tree loss and provide a beautiful, shady place where children and adults can enjoy a picnic, play and learn about wildlife. The Bekaa Valley is on one of the world’s most important migratory bird flyways and so woodland where migrating birds can feed and roost is vital.
